Empathy 101

How To Express Empathy:
1) identify how you think the person feels. i.e, if you see somebody
get hit with a brick, you would cringe, because you know they’re in
pain.  If they’re telling you about getting hit in the head with a
brick, you immediately know the same thing.

2) express that you know what that feeling must be by identifying it
i.e., if somebody tell you about getting hit in the head with a brick,
you would say, “Ow!  I’m sure that KILLS!”

3) apologize for your part in making them feel that way – “I wish I
hadn’t told you to go to that area.  I’m so sorry that happened to
you!”

You can add how you feel at the end – “I am frustrated too — I
really wanted to be able to do this….” Just remember that it is not
about you and they can and probably will still be angry after you
apologize because apologies aren’t magic words that fix everything,
but at least i can’t be accused of not being empathetic
